FAQs & Myths to be wary of:
1. When is the perfect time to apply?
After HSC 1st year or AS level exams. I repeat it is not after you complete your HSC or A2 level. Common App refreshes on August 01 every year.
2. Does IELTS help you secure a scholarship?
NO. It is but a cheap marketing tactic for Coaching centers in BD. SImply আপনি চুলায় রান্না করলে রান্নার উপকরণ (সব্জি/মাছ-মাংস/মসলা) আপনার রান্নার স্বাদের উপর প্রভাব ফেলবে, এক্ষেত্রে আগুন ছাড়া রান্না না হলেও আগুন কিন্তু রান্নার স্বাদের উপর কোনো প্রভাব ফেলবে না । You can even use Oven/Gas stoves/Pressure cookers whichever suits you. IELTS টাও একই। EPT বা English Proficiency Test Certificate ছাড়া আপনি উচ্চশিক্ষার জন্য যেতে পারবেন না কিন্তু এটি আপনার স্কলারশিপ প্রাপ্তিতে কোনো প্রভাব রাখবে না এবং আপনি IELTS এর বদলে TOEFL/DET ইত্যাদিও ব্যবহার করতে পারেন। শুধু মাথায় রাখবেন আগুনের পরিমান টা নিয়ন্ত্রনে রাখা লাগে তাই band score টাও যেন আবার minimal requirement এর নিচে না চলে যায়।
3. USA তে স্কলারশিপ পেতে Academic result খুব একটা ম্যাটার করে না।
I can’t belive people actually think that it is true.
4. আমার ২/৩/৪ বছরের study gap আছে আমি কি এপ্লাই করতে পারবো?
Stanford এ এইবার এমন শিক্ষার্থীও নেয়া হয়েছে যার study gap amount ১০ বছর। তাই আপনারও চিন্তার কোনো কারণ নেই। Just make sure to give the universities a feasible answer about why you had to take those gap years.
5. USA তে ভালো লেভেলের স্কলারশিপ পাওয়া অনেক কঠিন ।
No, it’s not if you follow the proper procedures. Fulll-rides are barely offered to begin with but a Full tuition fee waiver is pretty common. এখন আপনি যদি mediocore essay আর কোনোরকম প্রোফাইল নিয়ে Top ranking university তে স্কলারশিপ নিয়ে পড়তে চান তাহলে স্কলারশিপ কেনো সাধারণ acceptance ও পাবেন না এটাই স্বাভাবিক । তাই চেস্টা করবেন আপনার প্রোফাইলের সাথে সামঞ্জস্যপূর্ণ কলেজে এপ্লাই করার জন্য। অনেকেই আবার ট্রিগারড হয়ে যান “Low-ranked” university কথাটা শুনে। As much as it is true that rankings are not the only metric to measure the quality of an university it is also evident that BUET & DU being ranked as #800-1000 in the world rank we can consider any University above 800 rank better than the best in our country.
6. Well-ranked university means it’s the best.
As I mentioned before ranking is not the only metric. সব ফ্যাক্টর বিস্তারিত অন্যকোনো পোস্টে বলা হবে but for the instance you can take colleges like Babson, Bringhum, Houston, Baylor, Newjersey, Mississippi etc as irregulars. Some of them are Business Schools and some are specialized in a specific subject like EEE. The common thing is all of these colleges/universities are generally considered low-ranking but they beat even Ivies in their respective fields. (Man I should be paid by these universities for increasing their market among BD applicants xD)
Firstly congratulations! উপরের পোস্ট আর প্রশ্নোত্তর পড়ার পর আপনি ইতিমধ্যেই আপনার এপ্লিকেশান জার্নিতে অনেকের চেয়ে এগিয়ে গিয়েছেন। Wondering why or how? 80% of Bangladeshi students do not even know যে USA তে Class 11 এ থাকা কালীন আবেদন করা লাগে HSC এর পড়ে না। Requirements সম্পর্কে জানা কিংবা কাগজপত্র যোগার করা তো আরো অনেক পরের বিষয় । What’s next? (idk I feel lost *sigh*) .Let’s keep going with the questions for now. Starting with the most basic questions.
আমি কি USA তে কোনো বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে ফুল-ফ্রি স্কলারশিপ পাবো?
প্রথম কথা হচ্ছে আগে আপনাকে বুঝতে হবে স্কলারশিপ কয়ধরনের হতে পারে। সাধারণত ৪ ধরনের বৃত্তির কথা বলা যায় । যেমনঃ
i) Full ride (The one that includes your living costs & everything possibly related to your College)
ii) Merit-Based (University specific scholarship based on either or both your academic excellence and SAT score)
iii) Full tuition waiver (Here you can get 100% of your total university tuition waived but there will be no additional support)
iv) Partial Scholarship (Anything in between 1-99% tuition fee waiver).
So, it is indeed rare to get a fully funded scholarship thus the most feasible option would be to go for a Full tuition waiver. সোজা বাংলায় ইউনিভার্সিটি Tuition fee এর একটাকাও আপনাকে দিতে হবে না কিন্তু থাকা খাওয়া সহ বাকীসব যাবতীয় খরচ আপনাকেই বহন করতে হবে which is reality requires a lot of hard work but possible indeed। Merit-based scholarship আবার সব ইউনিভার্সিটি অফার করে না। এছাড়াও যাদের সামর্থ্য থাকে তারা পারশিয়াল স্কলারশিপেও চালিয়ে যেতে পারে।
2. What does it mean by Need-blind & Need based?
Need-blind বলতে বোঝায় এডমিশানে আপনার কলেজ আপনার আর্থিক সামর্থ্য বিবেচনা করবে না এবং Acceptance letter পেলে আপনার demstrated need সবটাই তারা বহন করবে। ব্যাপারটা শুনতে অনেক দারুণ মনে হলেও reality is quite harsh. International students দের জন্য মাত্র ৭টি কলেজ Need-blind এবং এদের মধ্যে ৩টিই Ivy leauge. Other’s are - MIT, Dartmouth, Amherst, Bowdin. Getting into one of them is a feat in itself so better not be too much hopeful.
Need-based বলতে বোঝায় আপনাকে তারা নিবে কিনা সেটা আপনার EFC (Expected family Contribution) বা টাকা দেয়ার সামর্থ্যের উপরও নির্ভর করছে । তাই ভালো প্রোফাইল ছাড়া সেসব কলেজে স্কলারশিপ পেতে বেশ বেগ পেতে হয়।
3. SAT exam কি necessary?কখন দিবো?preparation কিভাবে নিবো?
Yes, it is. There is nothing to argue with if you keep insisting - but the university website says it’s optional - best of luck with that. As of 2023, SAT has become Digital and if you wanna catch the EA/ED-I cycle you have to sit for your SAT no later than October 2023. For preparation, use Khan Academy and the group pinned posts on SAT.
Out of context (or in context) জ্ঞ্যানদান। Afaik for all the Fall 24 Candidates there was a call for opening a messenger GC. Although I commented on that post and even texted the initial creator personally I was not added to the group thus I had to leave my suggestions here. Firstly, let me just state what we do in our GC & discord server dedicated to Fall 24 applicants who are HSC 24 students.
Arranging skill development (IT/Communication etc) sessions inviting over experienced and distinguished guests.
Arranging tests (SAT/IELTS) related sessions in collaboration with our own group members who have already attended those sessions.
Sharing upcoming ECA opportunities.
Exchanging tips within and from existing members who have greater achievements in their respective fields (Olympiad/Essay Comps/Exchange ops etc)
Having a separate discord section for practicing speaking English.
Here the things that also should be mentioned is that out of 170+ members, only 20-30 people utilize those opportunities fully. So that means জিনিসগুলো শুনতে অনেক interesting & to some extent effective মনে হলেও, in reality, it only helps those who want to be helped. Now, I do not know the exact amount of fully dedicated applicants in the other Fall 24 group but if there are even 30+ interested applicants I would request the admins to implement the above-mentioned system(s).
