আজকের টপিক হলো IVY League নিয়ে। নিম্নে এই বিষয়ে আমি যা জানি সবকিছু বলার চেষ্টা করবো।
👉 IVY League কি?
IVY League হলো ইউনাইটেড স্টেইট অব অমেরিকা এর বিখ্যাত ৮ টি কলেজ এবং বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সমন্বয়ে তৈরি একটি সংস্থা। এটি ১৯৫৪ সালে প্রতিষ্ঠিত হয়। প্রতিষ্ঠাকালে এটি শুধুমাত্র খেলাধুলার মধ্যে সীমাবদ্ধ থাকলেও বর্তমানে তা লেখাপড়ার দিকেও এগিয়ে গেছে।
👉 এটির মধ্যে কয়টি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং কলেজ অন্তর্ভুক্ত আছে?
৮ টি বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় এবং কলেজ নিয়ে এটি গঠিত। নিম্নে তা উল্লেখ করা হলো -

👉 সুবিধাগুলো কি?
এসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়গুলো ফুল ফ্রী স্কলারশিপ প্রদান করে থাকে। তবে অনেক এ নাও পেতে পারে। কিন্তু কেউ চান্স পেলে একদম কম খরচে পড়তে পারবে। যারা পড়াশোনা করে তারা অনেক ভালো লাইফ লিড করে। এইসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে অনেক ভালো রিসার্চ হয়। নামকরা শিক্ষক এর তত্ত্বাবধানে লেখাপড়া করা যায়।
👉 আমি কি চান্স পাবো?
অবশ্যই আপনি চান্স পাবেন। তবে আপনাকে হতে হবে অত্যন্ত মেধাবী। তবে তার চেয়ে বড় কথা লাক থাকতে হবে। একটি উদাহরণ দিয়ে বুঝাই বুয়েট এ চাইলেই সবাই পরীক্ষা দিতে পারে না। তাদের কন্ডিশনগুলো পূরণ হলেই পরীক্ষা দেয়া যায়। আবার যারা পরীক্ষা দে তারা সবাই অত্যন্ত মেধাবী। যাদের লাক ভালো শুধু তারাই চান্স পায়। আইভি লীগের স্কুলগুলোও এরকম প্রত্যেকবছর হাজার হাজার শিক্ষার্থী আবেদন করছে। এমন না যে তারা মেধাবী না তারা সবাই প্রচন্ড মেধাবী কেউ রিজিওনাল অলিম্পিয়াড গোল্ড মেডালিস্ট কেউ বা ইন্টারন্যাশনাল। তবে তাদের ECA অনেক স্ট্রং। বাট তারা সবাই চান্স পায় না যারা সুন্দরমতো ইনফোগুলো উপস্থাপন করতে পারে এবং লাক ভালো তারাই চান্স পায়।
👉 ভর্তির যোগ্যতা কি?
▫️একাডেমিক ট্রান্সক্রিট (ক্লাস ৯ থেকে ১২)
▫️মিড ইয়ার স্কুল রিপোর্ট
▫️২ জন স্যার এবং ১ জন কাউন্সেলর এর রিকমেন্ডেশন লেটার
▫️SAT or ACT Scores
▫️IELTS/TOEFL/PTE Scores
▫️খুবই ভালো একটি essay
▫️Financial Documents
এগুলোর সাথে আরও কিছু লাগতে পারে এটা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপর নির্ভর করে। বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ওয়েবসাইট ভিজিট করলেই পাওয়া যাবে।
এইসব বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে চান্স পাওয়া খুবই কষ্টের আর যাদের অনেক টাকা আছে আর অনেক মেধাবী তারাই চান্স পায়। ২০১৩ সালে ফোর্বস পত্রিকার জরিপে দেখা যাচ্ছে এই কলেজগুলোর ৪৬% ফ্রেশম্যান স্টুডেন্ট এসেছে আমেরিকার টপ ৩.৮% ধনী ফ্যামিলি থেকে। এই ফ্যামিলিগুলোর ইনকাম বছরে ২,০০,০০০ (দুই লাখ) মার্কিন ডলার বা তারও বেশি।

Ivy League : The 8 private higher education institutions (University) in the Northeastern United States are collectively called the Ivy League. These are :
1. Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts
2. Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut
3. Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey
4. University of Pennsylvania (UPenn), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
5. Columbia University, New York City, New York
6. Cornell University, Ithaca, New York
7. Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island
8. Dartmouth College, Hanover, New Hampshire.
Rethinking The Ivy League Fandom
It's Ivy League Day and to curb the incoming doom of depression, Resident Procrastinator is here with her two cents.
Many of you ask us how to get into Ivy League schools (Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, UPenn, Princeton, Yale) or reach schools (MIT, Stanford, Duke). Most of us don't have any concrete answers for these questions - primarily because there are various resources for answering this question. But there's another reason why these questions miss a crucial aspect of US applications.
I'll give you an example. Meet Student A. Student A has a perfect SAT score of 1600, has 6 A*s in A levels/Golden GPA in SSC and HSC, has leadership positions in multiple organizations, has had a poetry book published, has a GitHub portfolio with lots of websites and apps made, has a gold medal from the Queen's Commonwealth Essay Competition and has a gold medal in one of the International Olympiads. You pick in your imagination. Student A is one of those prodigies or just someone extremely brilliant - a borderline genius, if you will.
But let's meet Student B. Student B has a 1500 SAT score, has 4 A*s in A levels/GPA 5 in SSC and HSC, works in a few voluntary organizations, and has recently opened a blog on cooking. Student B also participated in various local essay writing competitions and even tried out the Olympiads but couldn't go far. Student B is by no means on the same par as student A - that much is clear.
However, we're only thinking about the stats. If you talk to both of these students, there's a high possibility B cracks far more jokes than A. B seems less nervous than A too, and knows more about meme culture than A. Do you notice something?
(please don't ask me who's more likely to get into these schools between A and B. please.)
This is of course a hypothetical scenario. But it points to a big conclusion most people miss: The Ivy Leagues are NOT the ONLY great schools of America.
The reason why we think they're the only great schools is because we as a society have a tendency to disregard anything short of "the best". We think that liberal arts colleges aren't worth it just because of their nametag: liberal arts colleges. We don't think about other possibly good colleges simply because they're not as prestigious as Ivy Leagues. Make no mistake: these are truly some of the best universities of America. But they're not the only ones.
Just look at liberal arts colleges like Swarthmore, Oberlin, Haverford, or Williams. With significantly smaller class sizes, these colleges have a far less cutthroat environment than Ivy Leagues. Ivy Leagues are far more academically rigorous, and in my opinion, it's perfectly fine to NOT apply to Ivy Leagues and to apply to LACs only if you want a less rigorous surrounding.
Why am I saying all of this? Because numerous applicants every year make the mistake of only applying to the top most universities, many of whom only apply to Ivy League schools. This is a critical error where students don't look into other universities and make a bad university list - one that consists only of T20s or T30s (top 20/30 US unis). While this trend is slowly changing thanks to the efforts of many people within this group, I still wrote this post as a cautionary PSA. I encourage you to explore universities from different states, different rankings and different websites to have a much more comprehensive, well-thought out list. One that isn't only restricted to Ivy League schools. Make sure you have a decent number of safety universities (ones with high acceptance rates), mid-tier colleges (ones with slightly lower acceptance rates) and then you can also apply to top-tier schools including the Ivies. Bottom line is, if you're planning to apply to Ivies, great! I sincerely hope you get in there. If not, then that's okay too. You don't have to apply to Ivies if you don't want to.
Note: A safety/mid-tier college for you may not be the same for someone else. Differs from applicant to applicant.
Remember: just because a school doesn't have the same amount of resources or funds as an Ivy League school, does NOT mean they have no resources or funds at all. They have plenty of programs, grants and resources that you can utilize if you apply to such schools. So don't just restrict yourself to the Ivies and expand your university list to include all kinds of colleges.
And if you get rejected from the Ivies, don't fret. There are many other universities waiting for you to be discovered where you can flourish. Just don't discard them because you think "Ivy League or bust". Student B deserves a shot in this world. These universities do too.
